INFORMATION

Our ONE-TO-ONE ENGLISH FOR EXAMINATIONS IMMERSION COURSE will appeal to those who wish to improve their English for all major examinations including the respected IELTS, TOEFL and Cambridge English examinations. These exams are recognised by employers, professional organisations (Medical Council, Pharmaceutical Society etc.) colleges and universities all over the world. The examinations, all of which test the four language skills of Listening, Speaking, Reading and Writing, can be taken at specific times during the year.

The IELTS test is described as 'the high-stakes English test for study, migration or work' by the organisers. It may be taken as a General or Academic test depending on one's objectives. The Academic test is appropriate for those non-native English speakers who wish to study for a post graduate qualification at university and is the standard for entrance purposes. The TOEFL and Cambridge English are similarly described by their organisers as essential for entrance to academic institutions and for work purposes.

We will prepare you for your examination and assist you with all components - Listening, Speaking, Reading and Writing. Our tutors have a wealth of experience in presenting courses for IELTS, TOEFL and Cambridge exams.

Remember our courses are One-to-One and you are the only student. Only in this way can you be guaranteed a course that meets your needs and expectations. We can say without contradiction that an English language immersion course is the ideal way to prepare for the Speaking component of the test. Our tutors have experience of being examiners for various organisations and are ideal tutors for your course. You will benefit from their long experience and helpful advice which will help reduce stress levels to the absolute minimum.

While we never boast about our courses - humility plays an important part - we can claim that all our IELTS, TOEFL and Cambridge exam students have greatly improved their exam performance to allow entrance to university, progression with post graduate degrees such as Masters and Doctorates, admission to professional bodies in the English speaking world and teaching careers within the academic world. In addition, we have successfully prepared many students for advancement within their professions outside academia such as the medical, pharmaceutical and nursing professions.

As with all our courses, your specific needs will be identified and prioritised in the first lesson and the course will be designed to meet these needs. Our one-to-one method allows for continuous monitoring of progress and meeting evolving language needs so you can rest assured that your tutor will be flexible to ensure your course is relevant to your needs.

Obviously your course will focus on those areas in which you need to improve especially speaking and listening and of course good exam technique. In addition, vocabulary development, good understanding and implementation of the rules of Grammar and Use of English, Reading comprehension and Writing are covered. Correct preparation for the relevant exams is essential and many of our students benefit from excellent preparation for specific areas such as speaking and listening which are difficult to practise without the assistance of a good tutor. You can decide with the advice of your tutor on those specific areas which you need to concentrate on.

As your course is delivered by your tutor in the tutor's home this means that no time is lost travelling to and from your course. Lessons are relevant, personalised and centred around you - with you and only you in mind! Your tutor will carefully discuss your needs with you in the first lesson and carefully design your course based on these needs and your wishes! You are encouraged to bring all relevant related materials with you - working documents, notes, company literature, electronic and written presentations, correspondence etc. - and these can be worked on and incorporated into your course as appropriate.

Your continuing language needs are constantly monitored and the course focus can be altered to take these into account. Flexibility is important and of course more easily practised in the context of a one-to-one course! In this way we can offer an individually designed course that is relevant to your specific needs. After all we know your time is limited and you want to study those areas that are identified as relevant to you!

Below, you will find some general descriptions of the various major examinations. We will be pleased to advise you further on your choice of examination.

IELTS EXAMINATION

The IELTS (International English Language Testing System) examination is the most widely recognised qualification for entrance to British, Irish, Australian, New Zealand and Canadian universities, as well as other secondary education institutes and vocational and training programmes.

For university entrance, candidates need to take the Academic Module; for certain other types of education and training, the General Training Module may be more suitable. In both the Academic and General Training Modules, the four skills tested are Listening, Speaking, Reading and Writing. The Listening and Speaking tests are the same for both versions, while there are differences in the Reading and Writing tests.

IELTS ACADEMIC

The IELTS Academic test is for people applying for higher education or professional registration in an English speaking environment. It reflects some of the features of academic language and assesses whether you are ready to begin studying or training. This approach is widely supported by the institutions that recognise IELTS.

IELTS GENERAL

The IELTS General Training test is for those who are going to English speaking countries for secondary education, work experience or training programs. It is also a requirement for migration to Ireland, Australia, Canada, New Zealand and the UK. The test focuses on basic survival skills in broad social and workplace contexts.

TOEFL EXAMINATION

The TOEFL examination is described by the organisers as the most widely respected English language test in the world, recognized by more than 11,000 colleges, universities and institutions in more than 150 countries, including Ireland, the U.K., Australia, Canada and the United States.

It may be taken as a paper delivered test (a formal exam setting) or more frequently via the internet.

PAPER DELIVERED TEST - Paper-delivered testing is offered only in locations where testing via the internet is not available. The test is closely aligned with the TOEFL iBT® test, but it does not include a Speaking section because of the technology required to capture spoken responses.

VIA INTERNET - The TOEFL iBT® test is given in English and administered via the internet. It takes about 3 hours total for the 4 sections of the test (Reading, Listening, Speaking, and Writing). Be sure to plan for 3½ hours, allowing 30 minutes for the check-in process.

CAMBRIDGE EXAMINATIONS

There are many Cambridge examinations catering for different needs but the main ones are divided into five separate levels as follows:

A2 Key (KET)
Designed for learners with basic entry-level English, able to understand short texts, and to use simple survival English.
Paper 1: Reading and Writing
Paper 2: Listening
Paper 3: Speaking

B1 Preliminary (PET)
Designed for people with a wider range of vocabulary, able to hold longer conversations on familiar topics, and to write simple letters or notes. A useful preparation for higher level examinations.
Paper 1: Reading and Writing
Paper 2: Listening
Paper 3: Speaking

B2 First (FCE)
The most popular of the Cambridge General English examinations, B2 First is widely recognised as an important English qualification which demonstrates a good command of English for many practical purposes. Successful candidates are able to deal with a range of everyday situations in English, construct and follow arguments, and show an awareness of formal and informal language.
Paper 1: Reading and Use of English
Paper 2: Writing
Paper 3: Listening
Paper 4: Speaking

C1 Advanced (CAE)
Suitable for candidates who have reached a level of English adequate for most purposes, including writing in a variety of registers, and the ability to participate in relatively sophisticated discussions on familiar and unfamiliar topics, C1 Advanced is recognised by universities and employers worldwide.
Paper 1: Reading and Use of English
Paper 2: Writing
Paper 3: Listening
Paper 4: Speaking

C2 Proficiency (CPE)
Recognised by a number of professions such as business, medicine, and engineering, and by almost all British and Irish universities, as well as many other educational institutions worldwide, C2 Proficiency represents a very advanced level of English, approaching a level of English similar to that of an educated native speaker. In addition to extremely competent language skills, suitable candidates will have an appropriate maturity and educational background. This is the highest level Cambridge examination.
Paper 1: Reading and Use of English
Paper 2: Writing
Paper 3: Listening
Paper 4: Speaking
